Longing for Summerland

5 days left to teach. I'm SO ready to soak up summer.
Please, God...let it be a long, meandering
one full of blazing sunshine and gentle breezes.
Please God help me create for my kids the kind of summers
I had when I was their age. They were perfect...like out of a book.

I wanna go back there to Summerland and take my boys.

When I was little before we moved to town,
my summer memories are full of my grandparent's place.
My grandpa had an old yellow wheelbarrow.
We kids would hijack it and push each other around. Funny what
you remember and associate with summer. I remember the planes
that would fly over crop dusting and my grandmother's swing, the
smell of the greenhouse and the stiff, shiny ribbon that she
and my aunts used to wrap flower pots. Bags of peat moss stacked,
grape soda out of the vending machine out front, lots of cousins,
boys playing basketball in the barn loft. Learning to ride a bike
around the back of that big white house. There was always
watermelon to eat and a pregnant aunt or two. They once told
me that accidentally eating a watermelon seed was
HOW you got pregnant. To this day,
I'm really careful not to eat seeds when I eat watermelon.
Drinks of ice cold water from a spigot with a red handle that
were so hard to raise up, you got even sweatier just
trying to get a drink.

The garden was endless. We ate tomatoes straight off the vine
like they were apples. Birdhouses were everywhere,
I never knew why until later. They eat mosquitoes.

I remember how dark it got at night...it got SO dark.
Sometimes, in the dark, we'd have to go to the garage to
get grandpa and/or the uncles and it was pitch black
between the house and the garage. PITCH BLACK. There
was ONE light pole with a big utility light BUT that didn't count
cuz there were usually bats flying around that...no safety
to be had there. I was an overly-imaginative child and
when it was my turn to go out and call them in for dinner
sometimes I thought that the devil was sitting on the fence post
waiting for me. I was sure I could see him there.
Grandpa and the garage was a safe place. Grandma and
the house was another. In between the two, in the dark, with
the devil on the fence, I RAN.

In the summer, there were always millions of fireflies.
We'd catch em' and put em' in jars. We'd have a race to see
who caught the most then we'd let them all go at once attempting
to create our own natural fireworks display...
Weenie roasts and backyard games. Hot summer sun.
Bologna and mustard sandwiches. Moments
of wild play captured between helping to shell peas or pick beans.

God, it was all SO GOOD. I'm thankful.
I'm ready to bring back Summerland.
Only 5 more days to go...

A Perfect Picture of Parenthood...

Just LOVE this shot of my friend teaching her
kid to ride a bike. Her pretty and CRAZY funny face
totally express for me the emotional sum of parenting.
You can look at her and see fun, fear, stress, joy,
anxiety, laughter, energy and exhaustion.
It MAKES me smile.

You can also see "happy childhood" written
ALL OVER Addy's face...no fear, all fun, complete trust
in the momma that has hold of her.

A PERFECT picture of parenthood...the good kind.

Camp Aunt K's

The boys are gone for a couple of nights.
Camp Aunt K's is the funniest place, EVER.
They've got GREAT junior counselors...Shelby & Lucas.
Their fun & fitness director Eric is da bomb!
And the director/dean of the joint, Aunt K herself,
makes sure that everyone gets what they want to eat,
has lots of gum, and does all sorts of stuff that mom would
probably veto but that's super-cool for an Aunt to do.
Matt and I highly recommend this camp.
It's first-rate with a quality staff & facility.
AND it's so darn cost-effective...well worth the trip down
to drop the little guys off.
We love you Camp Aunt K! Thanks!

The Sound of Silence...

IT'S QUIET.

In looking for an image to depict or tv-less life, Day 2,
I found this guy. I like what he sees through his lens a lot.
Other than appreciating his photography, I don't know much about
him so if you link and content is out of line with who you know me
to be then...please ignore that part and just look at his pictures.

The photograph is titled "The Sound of Silence" and no
it is not a homage to Simon and Garfunkel...ewwwww....

It's quiet here. The kids seem fine with it but it is only Day 2.
I really missed my news fix this am but it passed.
I'm enjoying the PEACEFULLNESS. I may be crazy BUT
with the decrease
in overall noise, I'm pretty sure
that my heart rate has dropped.

Is noise emotionally toxic? Hmmmmm....

At any rate, I FEEL calmer. My fellas are finding
new ways to employ their little selves and SEEMINGLY
getting along a little better. I mean, they always do great
but sometimes they bicker. There has not been an
increase in the bickering since our electronic friend got the shaft.
We'll see if it holds.

SO to wind down for bed we read aloud...here's our book.
(Thanks for the idea Bethany!)

The Big UnPlug...

Lord, help us (me). We're gonna try being more TV-less this summer.
Here's the deal...The TV is officially off Monday thru Thursday.
Exceptions (if needed)...illness, rainy days and out of town travel.
Friday is officially movie day. We will either watch, rent or
go see ONE.
Saturdays, hmmmnnn...I dunno about Saturdays yet...
Sundays are free...watch or not, kids choice.
NOW...this is just the initial plan. I am expecting
to
HAVE to tweak it to make it work BUT the goal is that
we will watch LESS TV this summer.
We'll see if I've got what it
takes to stick to this plan.
You may start your betting pools now.
I'm a little afraid...honestly...Lord, help us (me).
